Brain Waves Are Proven Faster When Braking

There is a cool new fact about our brain that can be prove most useful especially on driving. A person’s brain signals can be tapped when driving to cut braking distances and can avoid car crashes as recent finding show according to scientists. It was found at the Berlin Institute For Technology as they attached electrodes on to the scalps of volunteers they asked to drive through using a simulator for driving. How they did it? The system was able to get an intention of the driver to break and was able to make a 3 meter difference off stoping distance.

This study was posted in the Journal of Neural Engineering. Their next goal is to check the system throgh a series of road tests. There were 18 volunteers were asked to keep 20 meters behind the a car simulated in from. It was to make sharp breaks at random intervals. Through EEG or electroencephalography, scientists were able to analyse brain signal’s of the person driving. The EEG technique was able to get a signal for intention to breat about 13 hundredths of a second just before the driver hit the breaks. They were able to see that at a speed of 100km/h (65m/h) the braking distance was reduced by 3.66 meters (12 feet) because of the brain waves intention to break.

As the brain processes commands, it would actually take a long process. From very first upcoming of cognitive processes and then intention building, until all the muscles start the movement is how your brain usually respond to this type of situation. Muscle tension in the lower leg was also checked if when the first signs of leg movement started before the accelerator was released and the brakes were hit. Through analyzing the data and the use of the EEG information, they were able to see which parts of the brain were used for braking and was also able to improve their detection system accordingly.
